In spite of his name, Ulissi was never really that into football. It was cycling that Diego loved, and he was encouraged by his father, who was an Italian MTB Champion.
He started riding at an early age and in 1996 he participated in his first race.
His mother, Donatella, works at a winery.
Ulissi and his wife Arianna live in Lugano (Switzerland) with their daughter Lia.
