Rui Oliveira up in the mix at Algarve opener

UAE Team Emirates had a promising start to the Volta ao Algarve with Rui Oliveira claiming 8th place in the opening stage from Lagos to Portimão (189.5km).

Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quickstep) was the fastest man on the day, winning the bunch kick. Designated sprinter Ryan Gibbons suffered some bad luck with mechanical trouble in the final 20km which ruled him out of contesting the sprint, though will likely have another opportunity on Stage 3.

Stage 2 tomorrow from Sagres to Fóia (182.8km) will see the battle for the General Classification commence with local favourite Rui Costa aiming to be up in the action.
