Rui is once again close to the victory
UAE Team Emirates' rider all day long in the breakaways and obtains the 2nd place
UAE Team Emirates’ Rui Costa secures another second place during stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia, 191 km from San Candido to the summit arrival in Piancavallo.
This is Rui’s third second place having previously achieved it in both stage 11 and 17.
Mikel Landa claimed the stage victory, whilst Quintana now leads in the General Classification.
Commenting on his performance, Rui (photo Belingheri/Bettini) said: “I had circled today’s stage on my calendar, it was a good course for me and the first part of the race was going to plan.
Then the situation changed when the top rider group bridged the gap from the breakaway meaning we had to start all over again to pull away from them.
I managed to attack once again and stayed with Landa when he counterattaccked on the final climb. I tried to stay with him, but today he was stronger.
There is still one more stage that’s suitable for attacks and although I spent a lot of energies today and yesterday, I’ll tro to do my best“.
Jan Polanc climbed up one place in the General Classification and he’s now 12th.
