McNulty returns to podium in Mallorca
American 3rd at Trofeo Serra Tramuntana as Arrieta takes first top-10
Brandon McNulty continued his good run of form, coming home in third place, narrowly missing out on victory at the Trofeo Serra Tramuntana classic in Mallorca today.
The 153km hilly parcours played out in a similar fashion to the Trofeo Calvià two days ago, with McNulty and Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora Hansgrohe) two of the strongest riders again, forcing the winning move on the key climb of Puig Mayor, only for the Belgian Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) to snatch the victory.
McNulty led out the three man sprint with 200m to go, but found himself outpaced in the closing metres. Nonetheless the young American takes positives from the days racing. Igor Arrieta rounded out the top-10 with 9th place on the day, his best result so far in a UAE jersey.
McNulty: “It was a hard race. I went at 200 metres to go and gave it all but the guys were just that bit quicker. I wanted to get the win but it was just out of reach today, it is what it is. My form here this week has been good and the results are there too with two podiums so things are pointing in the right direction. I’m hungry for the first win.”
