UAE Team Emirates’ Mohoric fourth in fifth stage after gripping breakaway effort
Stage five witnessed the determined grit from UAE Team Emirates’ Slovenian rider Matej Mohoric, as he formed part of the main breakaway for the day ultimately earning him fourth place. The stage victory went to Astana Pro Team’s rider Alexey Lutsenko. Chris Froome (Team Sky) retained the overall leader’s Red Jersey whilst UAE Team Emirates’ Rui Costa is in 21st place in the GC classification.
Commenting on his top five finish, Mohoric said: “It was a very tough stage during a very warm day. I found myself in the breakaway at the start of the stage but unfortunately the stage was not well suited to my skill and characteristics. My strategy was to try and conserve as much energy as possible and to defend myself during the climbs. Towards the end of the stage I managed to be at the front of the split in the breakaway and tried to pace myself in the last climb to achieve the best result possible. Fourth is the best I could manage today, unfortunately I couldn’t get the win for the team. Fortunately for us there are many more stages where we can try for a stage win.”
Starting in Vila Real and finishing in Sagunt, stage six is hilly with moderate amounts of climbing across the 204.4km course. The route includes five intermediate climbs that could make for some exciting breakaways.
