Hirschi top-5 on opening day at Tour de Suisse
Swiss 4th on tough first stage
Marc Hirschi confirmed his good form with 4th place after a hilly Stage 1 of the Tour de Suisse.
The riders took in a lapped circuit around Küsnacht (177.6km) with 2750m of climbing whittling the group down to a select few contenders.
Stephen Williams (Bahrain-Victorious) was quickest in the dash for the line , with Hirschi who had followed several moves on the final climb, just behind.
Hirschi also sits 4th overall at 10’’ from the overall leader Williams.
Tomorrow is another hilly final run-in from Küsnacht to Aesch (198km).
Marc Hirschi: “It was a hard and hot start to the race today. The guys worked really well to keep me up the front and out of trouble. I’m happy with my performance and I think it’s a good sign for the days to come. The goal over the next stages will be to continue to aim for a win and maybe even have a shot at the GC.”
