Hirschi settled for top-10 at Amstel Gold Race

Swiss shows aggressive racing in final kilometres

Marc Hirschi ended a strong performance at the Amstel Gold Race in the Netherlands today with 9th place after an aggressive showing throughout the race.

The 254km classic starting from Maastricht and finishing on the historic climb of the Valkenberg was won by veteran Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos-Grenadiers) who forged clear with Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R-Citroen) on the final lap of the finishing circuit.

Matteo Trentin played an important role in the final 50km, covering attacks and ever-present at the font of the peloton before a decisive split at -25km left an elite group of 10 riders at the front with Marc Hirschi represented for the Emirati team.

Attacks by the Swiss talent on the penultimate time up the Cauberg were neutralised before the winning move slipped away.

Marc Hirschi : “Generally I’m happy with my race and my shape, and I’m glad to be up there with the favourites. It was a very open and aggressive race with big selections on the climbs.
The last lap was very tactical, when the move went it was very difficult to bring it back, everyone was tired and nobody wanted to commit 100% to the chase. Also the final climbs were not quite steep enough to split it or be so decisive., but today Ineos did a perfect race so chapeau to them.
