Bretagne Classic-Ouest France: Consonni 9th in his first participation
Troia in the main breakaway of the race
Simone Consonni scored his first top 10 result in a World Tour one day race, coming in 9th in the Bretagne Classic-Ouest France (239,7 km).
The neo-pro from UAE Team Emirates manoeuvred well in the group sprint that closed out the French race. Elia Viviani (Team Sky) was the winner, ahead of Kristoff (Katusha-Alpecin) and Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida).
Another young rider from the Emirati formation, Oliviero Troia, stood out during the race as he pedalled for a long time in a breakway group of 7 cyclists who were eventually vaught by the pack with about 25 km to go to the finish line.
“Even though it ended in a sprint, the race was challenging, especially because the route demanded maximum responsiveness in every second – Consonni (photo Bettini, archive) explained – With Troia in the break that led the race for a long time, as a team we were able to stay covered in the group, managing our energies as best we could to prepare for a good sprint, which my team mates worked hard to set up.
In the sprint I ended up going head to head with sprinting greats. Placing in the top 10 is a decent result, especially considering that it’s the first time I’ve participated in this race“.
