Bad luck for UAE Team Emirates

An individual TT will be the last stage of the Two Seas Race

The premises for UAE Team Emirates for the final part of the 6th stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico (Ascoli Piceno-Civitanova Marche, 168 km) were good.

The team directed by the duo Marzano-Maini was ready for exploiting the potentialities of the two captains for the final kilometers, who were Matej Mohoric and Sacha Modolo.
The talented Slovenian rider would have been free to attack or to follow attacks on the hill of Civitanova Alta (summit at -7,8 km) or in the descent; the Italian cyclist was the leader for the sprint, with the goal of the top 5 (he was 4th in the 3rd stage).

Mohoric attacked at the end of the downhill, reaching the riders who were leading the race (Felline, Terpstra, Cattaneo and Gastauer) and going in a counter-attack, which however ended at -3600 mt, when the Slovenian rider crashed at a right turn: “I had good legs and I noticed that, after the summit of the hill, there could have been intersting conditions for an attack which could have anticipated the sprint – Mohoric (in photo Bettini) explained – Despite the speed was high, I succeeded in going clear from the peloton and in reaching the leading riders and I kept a high pace.
In order to do so, it was necessary to risk and maybe I risked too much, because my front wheel slided on the road.
I only suffered grazes on the right side of the body“.

The sprint too was unlucky for UAE Team Emirates, because Modolo, who had been masterfully led until -300 mt by Ferrari, could not launch his action, because his front wheel had been damaged in a contact while he was climbing the final hill.
Modolo noticed the problem only when he tried to raise the speed.

Gaviria won the stage on Sagan, Ferrari was 15th.

The attention is now focused on the final individual time trial, 10,5 km in San Benedetto del Tronto.
UAE Team Emirates will observe with high interest the performances of three riders: Rui Costa, who’s 17th in the general classification, Laengen and Ganna.

Filippo Ganna will face challenge represented by the time trial in the final stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico, 10,5 km in San Benedetto del Tronto on flat roads and long straights.

Sports director Marzano sets the ambitions of the Under 23 Italian champion of the discipline: “For the first time, Filippo will compete in a real time trial after having participated in the Vuelta a San Juan in a time trial riding on a road bike and after the opening team time trial of the TirrenoAdriatico.

This will be for Ganna a new experience: the time trial is scheduled at the end of a World Tour stages race which means daily efforts, increasing fatigue, managing of the energies on courses which never give you time to recover, team’s duties and personal commitments.

That’s why Filippo won’t be able to compare this time trial with the past experiences and that’s why it’s not possible to set precise goals.

For sure, tomorrow time trial will be an important experience for improving Gannas skills and for collecting feedbacks”.
