Another top-10 for Covi at Brabantse Pijl
9th place for the young Italian
Alessandro Covi showed another glimpse of his class today with 9th at De Brabantse Pilj , which was won by world champion Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck -Quick Step) ahead of Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix).
Already putting in a stellar season as a neo-professional (notably a 2nd place in the Giro dell’Appennino), the 22-year-old UAE Team Emirates rider infiltrated the leading group with 10km to go.
The group were just behind the leading trio of Alaphilippe, Van der Poel and Cosnefroy who arrived to compete for the win in the sprint, Covi was joined by the group of pursuers, with whom he reached the final straight (+13 “from the winner). In the sprint for the fourth, the young gun from the Emirati team took his first top 10 in a race in Belgium.
Alessandro Covi looked back on the crucial points of the race: “In the cobblestone section after the last stretch of the route I wasn’t able to catch the leading trio: that’s where the race was decided . I’m pleased with the top-10, I felt like my level was the same as the other guys who were in the group which is nice as it was a top field .
In the final, some riders were able to come around me- the legs were a bit hard and I got ninth place. I’m happy for my first result in a race in Belgium “.
