Almeida stays in Giro contention on road to Jesi
9th for Portuguese on stage, remains 2nd overall
Joao Almeida checked-off another day of the Giro D’Italia, taking 9th place on the uphill rise to the line on Stage 10 from Pescara to Jesi (196km).
Alessandro Covi kicked off the attacks on the final climb with 9km to go while Davide Formolo also covered moves as Joao Almeida sat in the group of overall race favourites and punchy sprinters who hung on over the final climb to duel it out.
Biniam Girmay (Wanty-Intermarche) was quickest to the line with Almeida placed closed behind. Juan Jose Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) continues to lead the overall classification with Almeida just 12’’ arrear in 2nd.
Tomorrow will be the flattest road stage of the race with just 369m of climbing between Santarcangelo di Romagna to Reggio Emilia (203km) where Fernando Gaviria will aim to open his win account.
