Trentin podiums at Tour du Limousin opener
Italian close to victory on stage 1
Matteo Trentin showed good sprinting legs to take 2nd place on the first of the four stages of the Tour du Limousin in France.
The opening day saw the riders take on 176.4 km with continuous ups and downs from Verneuil-sur-Vienne to La Soutterraine.
UAE Team Emirates was among the most active teams of the day, working to control the gap to the breakaway.
The breakaway of the day was brought back less than 7.5km from the finish thanks to the great work of Vegard Stake Laengen who led the group for many kilometers until the four leaders were reabsorbed.
Arriving at the last kilometer, Rui Oliviera started to drive and prepare for the finish for Matteo Trentin but Julien Simon’s (TotalEnergies) lone move ahead took everyone by surprise, with the French rider never looking back.
The UAE Team Emirates rider tried his comeback up to the last meter, but had to settle for second place.
Trentin: “Today we rode well and always together. In the end Rui did a really good job but Simon threw everyone off and he was strong up to the end. The legs are good and we are definitely ready to try again in the next few days. “
Tomorrow a flatter stage is scheduled, starting from Champcevinel and arriving in Ribérac (184.7 km).
