Top ten finish for Roberto Ferrari
UAE Team Emirates’ Roberto Ferrari eighth in fifth stage of 100th Giro d’Italia
UAE Team Emirates’, Italian sprinter Roberto Ferrari finished in the top 10 at the fifth stage on Wednesday, 10 May which was won by Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) in a fast sprint in the Sicilian town of Messina.
“Today was difficult and the circumstances were not ideal” said Roberto Ferrari. “Modolo was not at his optimal condition so I tried to sprint to reach the finish line. The sprint started at a very high speed with 400 meters still to go and with the strong head wind. It was a strange finale and I was not able to do better than eighth place.”
Tomorrow it will be the first stage (six) to be played out on the mainland. The stage is 207 km starting from Reggio Calabria finishing in Terme Luigiane. The last 2km has an average a gradient of 5.3%, while the ultimate 600 metres reaches 8%. The first three riders to the finish line take time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the final Intermediate Sprint (at 118.2km) comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
