Fisher-Black makes his mark on the Boucles de la Mayenne
Young Kiwi shoots up the GC to 4th and takes white
Finn Fisher-Black took a big result in his young career, with the 20 year-old duelling it out with some big names to take 4th on stage 2 of the Boucles de la Mayenne in France.
Still in his first full season as a professional, Fisher-Black was aggressive throughout the day, infiltrating a strong breakaway before forging clear in an elite group of 6 on the last climb with 6km to go.
Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) would prove the strongest on the hilly leg from Jublains to Pré-en-Pail-Saint-Samson (171km) with Fisher-Black on the same time. This result lifts the New Zealander to 5th in the overall standings at just 10’’ from Thomas.
Fisher-Black :
“We have a small team here so we have to be smart with our efforts but I think the guys rode perfectly today and covered all the bases. I knew I had to make some attacks in the final to try and go alone but couldn’t quite get away so it came down to a sprint and I tried my best but didn’t quite have the kick in the end. Happy to be able to take the white jersey into tomorrow’s stage.”
The race continues tomorrow with a flatter stage 3 from Saint-Berthevin to Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne (188km).
